Airbus and AGM develops materials from graphene for satellites
Airbus Defense and Space have recently talked about on the successful completion of the exploratory phase of its development program with AGM “Applied Graphene Materials”, The program aims at using unique graphene properties to enhance structural material for satellite applications.
AGM “Applied Graphene Materials” they have successes in the initial work, both parties are collaborating on a final product development phase, with the desired target to qualify the material for flight use and we hope debut first application by the end of 2017 or early 2018.
How graphene can enhance satellite?
We don’t know accurately how to use graphene to enhance satellites because the program work is covered under a secrecy agreement , but we can expect.
1- Electronics parts:
Graphene can enhance electronics like RAM, CPU and other because of extraordinary electronic properties graphene and it one of few materials can manufacture as layers from one atom makes graphene on of best choice for nanotech and future applications in the field of electronics.
2- Power system :
Any satellite depends on solar panels to get power and graphene grow effective of solar panel and solve the problem of low-efficiency solar panels where it’s can’t convert full solar power to electricity, and graphene present many ways to solved the most disadvantages in solar panels.
3- Safety :
Graphene the strongest material in the world so became ideal material to use as armor but why satellite needs armors?!
In space the sky full of meteor and micrometeoroid (usually weighing few grams or less than a gram) about 4,000-5,000 meteoroids hits earth daily, the most of it burn down and disappear when collision the atmosphere but satellite stays in atmosphere entrance so this micrometeoroid became not burn down yet and have high speed typically in excess of 20 km/s (72,000 km/h; 45,000 mph) it’s faster than the bullet about 30 time so any small micrometeoroid can cause big damages so spacecraft’s or some satellites usually equipped with armor to face this dangerous.
